Don’t Wait. Create.

I’m taking another deeper look at the personal development point in one of my quote images, and it’s one I had fun creating…

Don’t wait. Create.

Just three words, but three words that can transform your life. The grammar’s all over the place, but that’s done deliberately, because it makes the point better that way.

It’s a clear message and I suspect that ‘most’ people reading it would see the value in the point straight away. ‘Most’ people would agree that getting on and doing something is preferable to waiting.

If that’s the case then, why do ‘most’ people still spend more time waiting than creating..?

I’d sum up the reasons in 3 categories.

Firstly there’s fear. Ah, good old fear. The fear of failure is up there front and centre, but there are other fears – fear of change being the one that encompasses the vast majority of them. If the fear is not dealt with, nothing gets done.

Secondly, it could be that someone isn’t waiting because of fear as such ,they are waiting because they want to get everything right, everything just so before they start. It’s understandable that people can be in this holding pattern, and there’s nothing wrong with preparation.

However, there’s a difference, and it’s huge difference, between preparation, and wanting to dot all the I’s and cross all the T’s.

You can only plan and control things is life up to a point, and when you get to that point, trying to control all the possible outcomes simply leads to paralysis by analysis, and nothing gets done.

A third reason behind the waiting, is down to something as simple as planning. Scheduling.
The fear is being dealt with, the preparation is not obsessive, it’s just that the taking action is just not scheduled. It’s not written down in the calendar, so it finds its own calendar date of the 12th of Never, and nothing gets done.

Don’t wait. Create.

Once we start creating, it changes everything! We start to move towards our goals, we start to direct our life. It could be that quite simply, we start having fun!

It may sound obvious that creating is better than waiting, but not only can starting bring momentum, it can bring joy – if we wait, the passion of the moment, the feeling of the ‘now’, will be lost as and when we eventually start. If we just get on and create though, oh, we can give full expression to ‘ourselves’, the real us that we know we need to express.

It could be that once we do start creating, we find we’ve got it wrong, or made a mistake that needs fixing. Is this the end of the world?

I think I’m pretty safe in saying that no, it’s not the end of the world!

Mistakes can be corrected. Now of course, some mistakes in life can be serious ones, and it’s true that not all mistakes can be corrected.

That’s part of life though, and it’s not a reason to hold back from creating. As I mentioned previously, some people might say it certainly is a reason to hold back, that’s precisely the fear that’s stopping them.

Well, there’s a difference between fearing a mistake, imagining a mistake that hasn’t even happened yet, and the process of dealing with an actual mistake which might not be as bad to deal with as you’d thought, if it ever happens in the first place.

The 3 categories of reasons I covered for waiting rather than creating? Oh, they can all be dealt with through coaching, they are mindset issues.

I’d say it’s better to focus on the reasons for creating, and I’d go back to the three words I used in the image.

"Gordon Bryan",

Look to your goals, look to yourself. What is it you want to put out there to the world? What is it you want to create? I’d suggest that it’s not going to get out there by you doing nothing. There are no ‘do it for you’ fairies that are going to come along.

It’s up to you. It’s up to you to choose, it’s up to you to act.
Don’t wait. Create.
