Stonehenge Not A Henge – How This Affects Goal Setting And Goal Achievement!

Stonehenge is a world famous site, a big henge to the west of England made from big stones, right?
Well, no actually.
The site in Wiltshire is not actually a henge at all, and in this article I want to talk about how we can relate this idea to that of goal setting and goal achievement…

I came across this little gem of information as I watched the tv show ‘QI’. I love the show, because it combines interesting facts with intelligent word play, with comedians who get paid to play with words.

So, Stonehenge isn’t a henge at all. A henge is an archaeological term for an area with banking and a ditch inside. Stonehenge, on the other hand, has its’ bank inside the ditch.
Interesting, eh! Particularly when you consider that the word ‘henge’ was taken from the name of Stonehenge, which as I’ve mentioned, isn’t a henge at all!

Ha! That kind of thing makes me smile!
That could be one of the reasons I’m single, but it will continue to make me smile, and as I watched the show, quietly giggling to myself, I couldn’t help but draw up a tie-in to goal achievement, and yes, it’s to do with words…

Most people who speak English only use a small percentage of the available words in the language. Unfortunately standards of education have made this situation even worse.

When you throw in the phenomenon of mobile phone texting and social network websites like Facebook, where incorrect language is seen as the norm, and more and more people are using less and less words.

A smaller vocabulary means less ambition, less ideas, less angles to come from.
Let’s go back to Stonehenge to give an example…

When I wrote earlier about what defines a henge, and why Stonehenge isn’t one, you probably imagined what Stonehenge look like, and then pictured a bank and a ditch in your mind.
If, though, I had just said ‘it’s a big pile of rocks’, your image would have been less defined, less accurate – in other words, not as good.

It’s the same with goal setting – your goals need to be well defined, and in order to define them well enough, you need to know the words to do it.
Once you’ve set your goals, an increased vocabulary will help with their achievement. You will be able to ask better questions, both of yourself and of others, and you will be better able to understand the answers!

The impression you give to others will be better too, if you want to make an impression, you have to be able to speak properly.

So although it may sound simplistic, but although grammar and vocabulary seemed to be scorned on in some circles, improving your knowledge of both will do wonders for your goal achievement!

This is something I write about in my book ‘Transform Your Life In 21 Days!’
I wrote it in 2003, and was thrilled to have it described as ‘motivational magic’ and a ‘true gem in the field’
